Magazine Project Genre Research- InStyle

The first magazine I've chosen to analyze is the October 2018 issue of InStyle. This magazine has a clean-cut black and white cover with Janet Jackson being the focal point and largest part of the cover to catch your eye. The style and sophisticated, simple fonts used on the cover give this magazine a more high end, mature feel. This is a women's fashion magazine that also tackles beauty and celebrity lifestyle, therefore it's a great type of magazine to look into for my project. Some of the articles included are extensive interviews with the cover celebrity and other celebrities about their lifestyle and health nowadays, as well as various sections about different style trends right now and pieces of clothing you may find interest in buying. I oftentimes find that fashion magazines present clothes in this way on a blank page, where each product is placed in a collage pattern with a short description of what it is, what it's called, and what it's priced at. Although magazines are most commonly around 100-120 pages, this issue is 200, therefore there are many more advertisements dispersed throughout. The first 20 pages are exclusively advertisements and for that reason the table of contents is placed on page 21.  Advertisements included are ones for perfumes, makeup, and high-end fashion brands.Through the entire magazine, there is a pattern of having a short article on a 2 page spread with an advertisement next to it. Photos appearing in the table of contents are different photo shoots with celebrities that will later have an article in the magazine, while the articles have numerous fashion photos combined onto one page that help draw the readers attention to each article and makes it more visually appealing. The distribution number of this magazine is 1,745,697 in the U.S., as well as distributing to 16 other countries including Australia, the UK, Germany, Brazil, and Greece. The magazine has won two MIN's Best of the Web Awards for its digital articles.
