Use of Conventions

How does your product use or challenge conventions of your genre, and how does it represent social groups or issues?

In my genre, fashion magazines, I followed a lot of the common conventions. One I followed was the photos I used were mid or full body shots, as these are what are most commonly used so that the outfit and products are in frame and appeal to the audience more greatly. Another convention I mimicked to make my magazine more realistic was the article themes and titles. They each had to do with fashion, makeup, hair, health, lifestyle, and confidence, the most common articles I found in the magazines I researched. I also took advantage of making titles short and simple with exclamation points and other visuals that stand out more and immediately grab the consumers' attention. One way in which I challenged the conventions was that instead of using only pinks and purples from the cover on the table of contents and article, I used yellow as a pop of color as the model was wearing yellow accent pieces in some of the photos. I tackle social issues in my magazine by talking about having self-confidence and the struggles people face with their self-image. For many people in today’s society, especially young women who my magazine is curated for, this is an issue that they face. I decided to make my article a positive spin on that by discusses ways in which to have confidence and be content with the way you look. I feel this is important because it’s empowering and very relevant right now.
